Town Supervisor Lowell Announces Town Code Codification Plan

Having local laws, ordinances, and policies that are modernized and in alignment with community goals is essential in promoting a government that routinely advocates for and enforces community interests. The Town of Newport has some laws that have not been updated since the 1970s or earlier. A lot has changed since then. It is beyond time for the Town to start an all-encompassing review of our laws, ordinances, and policies for compliance with Federal, State, and local requirements, as well as the Town’s self-determined objectives set throughout the last decade.

In understanding the importance of modernization, compliance, and transparency, the Town Board has approved a plan to not only develop a Town Code but also publish it in an accessible and centralized database in partnership with General Code, LLC.

By working to ensure the Town has clear policies and procedures in place, this initiative will set up the Town for success in its long-term planning objectives and reinforce fairness through a firm legal and procedural foundation based on inclusivity, equal access, and community care.

The project is scheduled to take place from September 2024 until the spring of 2025. To learn more about the plan, please visit the Project Tracker webpage on the Town of Newport website.

All my best,
Nathaniel Lowell
